Sherman Van Ness Fire Station
Emergency Company 1 is located at the Sherman Van Ness Fire Station, 154 Uniondale Avenue, between Front Street and Hempstead Turnpike. Emergency Company 1 is divided into two parts, Rescue and EMS Squad.
Rescue
The members of Rescue are firefighters. They respond to firefighting alarms, such as house fires, building fires, and car accidents. They also assist the EMS Squad when someone is sick or injured and in need of an ambulance. Rescue members are trained in special areas, like confined space rescue and vehicle extrication.
EMS Squad
The members of the Emergency Medical Service Squad do not participate in extinguishing fires. Their main responsibility is helping the sick or injured residents of our community. The EMS Squad also tends to any of the firefighters if they are injured at a fire.
All members of the Emergency Company are or will be trained as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT). Emergency Company No. 1 is equipped with two ambulances and a heavy rescue truck.

The primary function of an engine company is fire suppression and extinguishment. They are also trained to help both the Rescue Company and the Ladder Company in their operations if the situation demands it. Engine Company responds to all firefighting alarms, such as building fires, car accidents, brush fires, and others. Brookside is located on Park Avenue, between Uniondale Avenue and Davis Avenue. They are known as the “Pride of Park Avenue.”

They are also responsible for doing overhaul, which means opening up walls and ceilings to check for fire extension and proper extinguishment. Company 4 also trained with the Rescue Company in rope rescue and elevator emergencies.
